Part II: Rethink your employees first day, benefits edition

Don’t underestimate the importance of what you are offering your new hire. Your benefits package is a major part of how you are building your brand and creating employee loyalty.

In order for your new employees to understand the value of what you’re providing, take time to make sure every aspect of their coverage is understood. Health insurance is no doubt one of the most important and least understood benefit to your employees, and employees may feel awkward asking questions. Encourage them anyway.

Consider what it’s like when an employee comes to you with a problem about their health insurance, because of a lack of understanding about how the plan works. By discussing the details of plans upfront, you can avoid these troubles down the road. Here are just a few things to review:

Help your new employees understand their new health insurance

  • What health plans are offered, network coverage, premiums, deductibles, copayments and coinsurance, plus other differences in plans.
  • How to use a high-deductible health plan, if you are offering one.
  • Dental and pharmacy benefits, plus how to use a drug formulary for surprise-free trips to the pharmacy.
  • Additional benefits such as short- and long-term disability and AD&D.
  • How to register and use myWellmark®, for a comprehensive, transparent look into health care usage along with easy-to-use personalized tools, resources and insights.
  • Information about virtual visits with Doctor On Demand® and instant answer to health care questions with BeWell 24/7SM.
  • Value-added and bonus benefits to expect from the health insurance carrier.
  • How to take advantage of health and well-being benefits such as wellness centers, wellness assessments, health and fitness challenges/programs, health incentives or rewards, onsite biometric screenings and more. Psst...if you're on a budget, and are fully-insured group who offers Wellmark insurance, you can get a workplace wellness benefit for your employees at no cost to you!
  • Other perks, such as flexible work options, tuition reimbursement, fitness centers or gym reimbursement and help with financial planning.
