Sheila Riggs, DDS, DMSc
Dr. Sheila Riggs is chair of the Department of Primary Dental Care at the University of Minnesota (UMN) School of Dentistry. Prior to her role at the UMN, she was chief executive officer of Delta Dental of Minnesota from 2005-2008. Previously, Riggs was vice president, Stakeholder Consulting at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa and executive director of The Wellmark Foundation.
An Iowa native, Riggs received her dental degree (DDS) from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She went on to earn her doctorate of medical sciences (DMSc) in epidemiology from Harvard University. She maintains faculty appointments at her alma maters.
As chair of Healthy Iowans 2010, Riggs led a group of 500 Iowans to create a blueprint for action to improve the health and well-being of all Iowans by the year 2010. Riggs was the founding dental director of the Ames, Iowa, Free Dental Clinic, a past member of the board of directors of the United Way of Central Iowa, and an expert reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration.
