Dental Specialty Definitions
Endodontist: A dentist who specializes in disease and injuries involving the roots of teeth.
General Dentist: A dentist who specializes in evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and/or treatment (nonsurgical, surgical or related procedures) of diseases, disorders and/or conditions of the oral cavity and facial area.
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist: A dentist who specializes in nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions.
Oral And Maxillofacial Surgeon: A dentist who specializes in diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, deformities, defects and esthetic aspects of the oral and maxillofacial regions.
Orthodontist: A dentist who specializes in interception and treatment of malocclusion of the teeth and their surrounding structures.
Pediatric Dentist: A dentist who specializes in treatment of children from birth through adolescence; formerly known as a pedodontist.
Periodontist: A dentist who specializes in treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth.
Prosthodontis: A dentist who specializes in restoration of the natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth with artificial substitutes.
