As we get older, we tend to put our pool days behind us.
"I'm here to tell you to get back in the pool," says Molly Charley, director of aquatics at TrailPoint Aquatics and Wellness in Ankeny, Iowa. She teaches water workouts for people of all ages. "It's fun, a great way to connect, plus you'll get a workout."
It's just fun

At TrailPoint, Wellmark member Annette Burnham, 68, enjoys a class called Hydro-Training. "This class works on range of movement, developing muscle tone, and strengthening abdominals," says Charley, who often instructs the class.
"I tried a class like this years ago, and the people were much older than me, but they were far better than me, too. Now, after taking the class for over a year, I feel myself growing stronger," said Burnham, who alternates her water class with other, out-of-water classes, like yoga, Pilates and aerobics.
"I need variety, and I prefer classes that are, quite simply, fun," says Burnham. "In Hydro-Training, we're always trying new things. One definite plus about pool workouts is that you don't sweat. You come out refreshed. you just feel good and happy."
According to Burnham, the class has more than doubled in size over the last year. "Last week, there were over 35 people in the class, some older than me, some younger. When it comes to water, age just doesn't matter. You just adapt to your own ability and work on your own personal growth."

Burnham agrees that many people are hesitant about trying water workouts. I hear people say that they will try the class once they have lost weight, because they don't want to be seen in a swimsuit. However, the great thing about the water is that no one sees anything but waist up," she laughs. "Truly, no one cares. What matters is just showing up."
What keeps her coming back? According to Burnham, "It's always a better day when I've worked out. I never regret it. I just feel better overall."
