Test the waters

Starting a water workout

While pool time is fun for children, adults enjoy a serious health boost from swimming, too. Water exercise is gentle on the joints, making it good for those with arthritis or chronic pain. Swimming boosts metabolism, builds muscle and burns fat and calories. And, water workouts are known to improve mood, strengthen bones, cut cholesterol levels and enhance cardiovascular health.

Make a splash

If you’re new to water workouts, you can set yourself up for success with these tips:

  1. Gear Up

A comfortable suit and a good pair of goggles are a must. A swim cap is optional. If you are a beginner, a kickboard will help you build stamina.

  2. Start Slow

Swimming challenges every muscle in your body, and it takes time to adjust your breathing when you’re in and out of the water. Don’t expect to swim for an hour during your first time. Instead, start with a few solid minutes and build from there.

  3. Add Variety

Practicing different swimming strokes works various muscle groups and adds variety to your workout. For extra fun, try water aerobics, aquatic Zumba or other creative classes.

Getting started

There are opportunities for swimmers of all levels to get moving. Many community pools designate lap-swim hours for adults, while others allow adults to hop in during a pool break. Leisure laps are a great way to get started, and you can create your own interval program as you build strength. Alternate swimming a few pool lengths at a relaxed speed and a few vigorous laps, and incorporate short rest periods between each repeated set. If laps aren’t your thing, cross back and forth with a kickboard or register for a water aerobics class.
