Since its founding in 1963 as GILMOR+DOYLE, MODUS Engineering External Site has been consulting and designing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technology systems in Iowa and beyond. Work hard, have fun
You won't find off-the-shelf designs at MODUS, and that rings true for its employee benefits, too. With right around 50 full-time employees in three locations, cultivating an enjoyable workplace culture is a priority. From company outings and holiday-themed socials to a 4.5-day work week and flexible scheduling, the firm believes working hard and having fun lead to successful projects.
And the variety doesn't stop there. "Employees aren't pigeonholed based on previous experiences," says Michelle Carpenter, the human resources director. Because of the variety of projects, employees can get involved in different aspects, cross-train roles and responsibilities, and even advance to become subject matter experts. Plus, the firm's Training Bucks program allows employees to explore professional development opportunities and coursework.
Coverage that counts
When it comes to health benefits, the firm offers a high-deductible health plan, absorbing the majority of costs and even funding health savings accounts for both single and family plans. Michelle likes to check in with employees during annual review time to see how things are going. "I very rarely hear about any issues from my employees," she says, noting that Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has covered MODUS employees for the past nine years. "Plus, myWellmark® is robust, and I can send them out there to print new ID cards, see Explanations of Benefits (EOBs), or to find a provider."
By combining a unique approach to project work with useful extras that matter most to its staff, MODUS has found a blueprint for employee retention and industry recognition. Now that's a win-win.
