DES MOINES, IOWA — Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has achieved a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for health plans, currently available to Iowans for purchase through the Health Insurance Marketplace®.

In compliance with the Affordable Care Act, CMS established a rating system for plans offered through the Health Insurance Exchange, based on clinical quality management, enrollee experience, and plan efficiency, affordability, and management. Star ratings help consumers make informed decisions. The data collected provides oversight and actionable information to health plans to improve quality. Under the rating system, health plans are given an overall rating on a 5-star scale, with 5 stars representing highest quality. This is the first year Wellmark received a star rating, based on CMS requirements.

Individuals and families shopping for their own health insurance are currently able to compare Wellmark health plans on Healthcare.gov and enroll in a plan for 2023 coverage until Jan. 15, 2023, as well as buy directly from a local Wellmark agent. The Health Insurance Marketplace provides subsidies to help many people with their premiums. The site will estimate costs for each plan including subsidies, so individuals can compare benefits, network coverage and out-of-pocket expenses.
