Wellmark has learned that Premera Blue Cross was the target of a cyberattack to gain unauthorized access to its data systems. Wellmark wants to reassure our members, employees, providers and brokers that Wellmark’s data systems have not been impacted. As a standard practice, Wellmark has our own protection strategies and systems in place to combat these types of advanced threats.

It’s important to understand that Wellmark and Premera are separately managed companies. Premera, like Wellmark, is one of 37 Blue Cross Blue Shield plans nationwide. The significance of Premera’s cyberattack is still being assessed and investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

There is potential impact, albeit small, to some Wellmark members if they received services outside of Iowa and South Dakota in areas covered by Premera. Premera operates in just two states – Alaska and Washington.

If you feel you may have been impacted, Premera is offering two years of identity theft protection and credit monitoring services. To learn more and sign up for these services, please visit www.premeraupdate.comExternal Site.

We are working closely with Premera to learn more and will communicate with any impacted members when we receive more information.
