Cory Harris holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa, and earned both his Master of Business Administration degree and Juris Doctorate from Drake University, where he graduated with high honors and Order of the Coif.


Cory Harris is the executive vice president and chief operating officer for Wellmark, a mutual insurance company that provides health coverage to more than 2 million Iowans and South Dakotans. Additionally, Harris serves as chair, president, and chief executive officer of Wellmark's subsidiary company, Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa, Inc., a health maintenance organization incorporated in Iowa.

As chief operating officer, Harris plays a central role in the development and execution of Wellmark's key, long-term business strategies. He is also responsible for driving other innovative efforts that support and enhance the vision, mission and core values of Wellmark and has responsibility over the day-to-day operations of the company, including the areas of: Health Care Innovation and Business Development, Finance, Technology, Operations, Human Resources, Legal, Compliance, Corporate Governance, and Government Relations/Public Policy activities.

Having spent much of his career shaping policy and improving operational efficiencies in health care, Harris brings a unique perspective to understanding and managing the risks and complexities within Wellmark's highly regulated environment. He is dedicated to driving team-focused, collaborative, cross-functional excellence across organizational lines, while focusing on growth, financial strength, and operating efficiencies that contribute to Wellmark's long-term success.

Harris has been a member of Wellmark's Senior Leadership Team since joining the company in 2011. Prior to his current role, Harris served as executive vice president, chief administrative and legal officer.

Before joining Wellmark, Harris spent 11 years with Iowa's largest law firm representing various health insurance clients (including Wellmark) in areas such as provider agreements, antitrust, fraud and abuse, licensing, Medicare, Medicaid, HIPAA (privacy and security), compliance programs, and other legislative and regulatory issues.
