Blue AccessSM

An Open Access Health Product

This innovative health plan gives your employees complete coverage and direct access to every provider in the Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa network — without referral. Benefits are available whenever covered services are received from network providers.

As the group administrator of a large employer group, you have great flexibility in customizing a Blue Access plan to meet your group's unique needs. You can customize:

  • Deductibles
  • Coinsurance amounts
  • Covered and non-covered services
  • Prescription drug coverage

Five Points You Need to Know About Blue Access:

  • Use network providers. Blue Access gives your employees coverage when they see any of the providers who participate in the Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa network, which includes 96 percent of hospitals and 88 percent of physicians in Iowa. Benefits are not available if your employees go outside the Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa network.
  • See a primary care provider for preventive care. Blue Access emphasizes preventive care by offering benefits intended to keep your employees healthy, which translates into a healthier workforce for you and helps control health care costs. Employees receive coverage for preventive benefits when they visit one of the hundreds of primary care providers (PCPs) who contract with Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa. Women may also see an OB/GYN for preventive obstetrical and gynecological services. These preventive benefits include routine physicals, well-child care, immunizations, mammograms, and well-female exams.
  • No referrals needed for network providers. With Blue Access, no referrals are needed for specialty care. When your employees or their dependents need care, all they have to do is make an appointment with a network provider to receive benefits for covered services. The specialist must participate in the network for benefits to be paid.
  • Prescription drug plan included. Blue Rx Preferred prescription drug coverage has a three-tier copayment structure to encourage your employees to use generic or lower-priced drugs. Different copays apply for generic drugs, specially selected brand name drugs, and all other brand name drugs. Blue Rx Preferred provides convenient access to a large pharmacy network that includes both national retail chains and independent pharmacies.
  • Coverage for routine vision exam. Because Wellmark is committed to total health, we include coverage for a routine vision exam in all our Blue Access health plans and offer separate vision options as well.

Contact your Wellmark account manager or broker to find out if Blue Access meets your needs.
