Dr. Sheila Riggs is Chair of the Department of Primary Dental Care at the University of Minnesota (UMN) School of Dentistry. Prior to her role at the UMN, she was CEO of Delta Dental of Minnesota from 2005-2008. Dr. Riggs came to MN from Iowa where she was Vice President, Stakeholder Consulting at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa and Executive Director of the Wellmark Foundation. An Iowa native, Dr. Riggs received her dental degree (DDS) from the University Iowa College of Dentistry. She went on to earn her doctorate of medical sciences (DMSc) in epidemiology from Harvard University. She maintains faculty appointments at her alma maters.
As Chair of Healthy Iowans 2010, Sheila led a group of 500 Iowans who created a blueprint for action to improve the health and well being of all Iowans by the year 2010. Dr. Riggs was the founding Dental Director of the Ames, IA Free Dental Clinic, a past member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central Iowa, and an expert reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration.
Currently, Riggs is on the Board of Directors of the Greater Twin Cities United Way and the YWCA of Minneapolis. She also serves on the Humphrey Institute Dean’s Advisory Council. Last year Sheila was chosen as an Industry Leader by the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal.
