Applying for an NPI

Health care providers and organizations can apply for their NPIs using one of three methods:

1. Complete an online application via the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) Web site.
   
2. Contact the NPI Enumerator at 800-465-3203 for a paper application.
   
3. Use the Electronic File Interchange (EFI) or “Bulk Enumeration” option. An employer or trusted organization can obtain an NPI for a health care provider using this method if they've received permission from the health care provider. For additional information on this method, visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Web site.

Note: You will receive an NPI via the same medium you use for the application. For example, if you apply for your NPI via the NPPES secure Web site, you will receive your NPI via e-mail.

The average response time for receiving your NPI varies significantly depending on the application method selected:

• If you apply electronically, you should receive your NPI in about 20 minutes
• If you submit your application on paper, you should receive your NPI in about 6-8 weeks

Please keep a copy of your Certification Letter. You may be required to submit it to a business associate.
