Health Care Quality & Cost

Hospital Resources

Knowing how hospitals in your area compare on quality measures and cost can help you make wiser care choices.

  • Select Quality Care: Compare hospital based on number of patients per procedure, length of stay, and complication rate for more than 150 procedures or diagnoses. This tool is provided to Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan members through WebMD Quality Services.

  • Iowa Healthcare Collaborative: The Iowa Healthcare Collaborative works toward the goal of exceptional health care in Iowa. The Iowa Healthcare Collaborative has a unique role in accelerating clinical improvement in Iowa. It provides an objective, inclusive focal point for public reporting of accurate and clinically-relevant performance data.

  • CMS Hospital Compare: Compare hospital on quality measures related to heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, and surgical care. Provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

  • Iowa Hospital Price Point: Research the median and average charges for services at hospitals statewide through this Iowa Hospital Association tool. Iowa Hospital PricePoint should be considered a starting point for comparing costs of care between Iowa hospitals. Patients should contact individual hospitals to get further details about the possible cost of their care.

  • HealthGrades Hospital Report Cards: Get a list of hospitals and their ratings for a particular procedure or diagnosis through HeathGrades, an independent health care quality company. To receive a rating, a hospital must have treated 30 or more patients in the procedure or diagnosis during the three-year data period.

  • JCAHO Quality Check: Search for health care organizations that meet JCAHO's (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations) patient safety and quality standards. To earn and maintain accreditation, organizations must go through an extensive on-site review by a team of JCAHO health care professionals at least once every three years.
