About WalkingWorks for Kids

It's a growing epidemic in our country. Overweight rates have doubled among children and tripled among adolescents since 1980.

  • Only 21 percent of young people eat the recommended number of servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Children and teens need 60 minutes of activity a day for their health.
  • Being overweight duing childhood and adolescence is associated with being overweight as an adult.
  • 60 percent of overwight children ages 5-10 years old already have at least one risk factor for heart disease.

WalkingWorks for Kids is a way for kids and their parents to take small steps that can reap big rewards in a healthier family. By encouraging children and teens to turn off the TV and get moving, and to exchange the junk food for more nutritious snacks and meals, adults can help their children develop lifelong healthy eating and exercise habits.

Start WalkingWorks for Kids
At the beginning of each month, take a few minutes as a family to set your nutrition and activity goals. Your children's goals may include how many hours of TV they're going to watch (or not watch), how many servings of fruits and vegetables they're going to try, or even a list of fun activities to fit in throughout the month.

Track daily milestones. Have each family member write their accomplishments on a calendar prominently displayed in your kitchen or other busy area in the home — number of steps taken, minutes exercised, servings of vegetables eaten, etc. This will help keep everyone motivated. When the entire family reaches its fitness goals, treat everyone with a group outing or other fun activity.

Don't forget to praise your kids' healthy habits. Reward them for keeping up an exercise routine and for making smart food choices. Just remember to keep the rewards healthy —like doing a fun activity together instead of taking a trip to the ice cream shop.

Remember, healthy eating and exercise habits begin early. Show your children the importance of making the right food choices, and balancing their diet with an active lifestyle, and you'll be on your way to giving them the tools they'll use for a lifetime.
