Choosing the Right Shoes
Choosing the right pair of shoes is very important to the success of
your walking program. If you end up with a foot, knee, or ankle injury,
you won't want to keep up the great activity habits you are creating.
Think of all the work your feet do hauling your body around everyday.
Treat them right with a pair of quality walking shoes. The following
guidelines might help make your shoe-shopping trip more enjoyable and
less confusing.
- Before you go to the shoe store, create a plan. Decide how much money
you are willing and able to spend and stick to your budget. Do not
let yourself give into pressure from a salesperson.
- Your feet increase in size throughout the day and while exercising.
Be sure to try on shoes at the end of the day or after a walk.
- When you try on shoes wear the same socks you will wear during your
walks.
- Try on BOTH shoes and get up and walk around the store at your walking
pace.
- Make sure there's “wiggle room” for your toes. Your
longest toe should not push up against the end of the shoe.
- The shoes should feel good when you put them on in the store. Never
buy shoes thinking that they will “break in.”
- Replace a pair of shoes you wear at least 4 days
per week approximately every 3-6 months.
- Most importantly: your shoes should be comfortable for you! Everyone
has
different feet — you need to find a pair that you find comfortable.
