BlueCard® The Power of Blue from Coast to
Coast
When you have Alliance Select, Classic Blue, or Blue Advantage health
coverage, you and your dependent family
members have the benefit
of
BlueCard when
outside
of your network area.
Classic Blue and Alliance Select
BlueCard offers
you coverage wherever you travel. Here’s how it works:
- Call 1-800-810-BLUE or visit BlueCard Doctor & Hospital Finder
to locate the nearest participating doctors and hospitals.
- Present your ID card to a participating Blue Cross and Blue Shield
doctor or hospital.
- The doctor or hospital verifies your membership and submits the
claim to Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
- The doctor’s or hospital’s local Blue Plan pays the
health care provider directly. You are responsible only for applicable
deductibles,
copayments or coinsurance.
- Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield sends you an Explanation
of Benefits (EOB).
For Alliance Select members: You save money when you use PPO providers.
Your claims are processed at your PPO health plan’s in-network coinsurance
level. Blue Plan PPO-provider negotiated prices are typically lower than
traditional participating provider prices.
Blue Advantage
BlueCard offers you coverage for emergency care wherever you may travel.
Emergency care is medical care for a serious or life-threatening
illness or injury. If you are outside of your plan’s service area
and experience an unexpected emergency situation:
- Seek care at the nearest hospital emergency room, or
- If time permits, find a participating hospital by calling the customer service
number on your ID card.
When you receive care through a participating BlueCard hospital, show your ID
card to receive these advantages:
- The physician or hospital verifies your membership and submits the claim to Wellmark
Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
- All participating doctors and hospitals are paid directly.
- Participating providers agree to accept the payment arrangements of the Blue
Plan in their home state. You are responsible only for applicable deductibles,
copayments or coinsurance.
- If you are admitted to the hospital due to an emergency, the coinsurance you
pay is based on the lower of the billed charge for covered services and the negotiated
price for covered services that the local Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan passes
onto Wellmark if applicable.
- Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield sends you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB).
