COBRA 11-Month Disability Extension

Wellmark continuously reviews and monitors its COBRA administration services, and recently analyzed the practice of accepting Social Security Notice of Award Letters at any time during the 18-month COBRA eligibility period against the denial of these letters, when received beyond the time limit set by regulatory guidelines.

As a result of this review, the COBRA team accepts Social Security Notice of Award Letters received at any time during the original 18-month eligibility period and evaluates them for the 11-month extension.

New Generic Drugs Available for Cholesterol and Depression

The patents on two popular brand-name, prescription drugs — Zocor® for cholesterol and Zoloft® for depression — have expired, which is creating an opportunity for you and your employees to save a significant amount of money by selecting the new generic options.

It’s estimated that Zocor’s generic equivalent will lower the price of cholesterol-lowering medication by 80 percent over the next six to eight months. By switching to the generic version, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield members with a prescription drug benefit can expect to realize an annual savings between $200 and $250 on copayments.

As an employer, you also could see significant savings. Nationally, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans spend a combined 15 percent of pharmacy benefit dollars on drugs like Zocor and Zoloft. An association survey found that switching to the new generics could save $2 billion a year.
