Selling Medicare Products —Key Dates

For People Aging-in to Medicare

Individuals are eligible for Medicare if they are a U.S. citizen or are a permanent U.S. legal resident for five continuous years, and:

  • Are 65 years of age or older and eligible to receive Social Security; or
  • Are under age 65, permanently disabled, and have received Social Security disability insurance payments for at least two years; or
  • Require continuing dialysis for permanent kidney failure or need a kidney transplant

Depending on an individual's eligibility date, generally there is a seven-month initial enrollment period for Medicare that includes the three months prior to the month an individual becomes eligible, the month an individual becomes eligible, and the three months after the month an individual becomes eligible. If an individual is already receiving Social Security benefits, he or she will automatically be enrolled in Medicare.

For questions about Medicare eligibility, contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users should call 1-800-325-0778), or go online to www.ssa.gov.

Joining a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan

After May 15, 2006, an individual may enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan, drop a plan or change plans only during the period of November 15 through December 31 each year, except in certain situations.
