What You Can Do

Be Cost Conscious

Understand Charges for Services

Insurance shields consumers from actual costs. What is the actual cost of a routine physical or a prescription for antibiotics? It’s considerably more than the small copayment you may pay at the doctor’s office or pharmacist.

View these television messages to see the simple steps that can make a big difference in your health care and associated costs.

Here are some tips to help you become more cost conscious when it comes to health care:

  • Review the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) (pdf). These statements explain how a health care bill is settled by your health insurance company. You can also use the BlueConnection® tools to monitor claim payments.

  • Ask questions about your treatment. When a test or treatment is suggested, ask why it is needed and how it will help you. More health care is not always the same as better health care.

  • Review your health care bills. Watch for duplicate billings, incorrect dates, and billing for supplies, medicines and tests that you didn’t receive.

  • Provide complete medical records to all providers. If you change doctors or visit a specialist, have your previous doctor forward copies of your records. This will save you time and money, because you won’t have to repeat tests you’ve already had.
