Leading Public Policy

Decisions Count® | Disease Management | Online Tools | Reminder Programs

Wellmark is a leader when it comes to taking a stand on public policy issues that impact health care and health care costs. Wellmark proactively works with legislators providing them with information on the impact of health care proposals in Iowa and South Dakota.

Reduce the number of uninsured Iowans and South Dakotans

Costs incurred by uninsured patients result in higher health care costs for everyone. Wellmark shares information with public policy makers about barriers to health coverage and offers alternatives for the uninsured.

Wellmark participates in:

  • hawk-i. Iowa’s program for uninsured children.

  • Basic and standard plans. Health insurance plans for individuals with no other health insurance options.

Support and strengthen health care services

Wellmark is committed to supporting policies that limit or reduce upward health care cost trends. This includes support for:

  • Elimination of the Medicare payment inequities in Iowa and South Dakota.

  • Full funding of government programs (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.) to eliminate cost shifting to the private sector.

  • Reasonable limits on non-economic damages in medical malpractice cases.

  • Proposals addressing shortages of nurses and other skilled health care services workers.

  • Strengthening health care availability in rural areas.
