Make the Most
of Your Office Visit | Prevent Medical Errors (PDF)
Here are some tips to help you make the most of an office visit:
- Provide a copy of your complete medical record on your first
visit to the doctor. This helps a new doctor build your medical
profile and put your current health into perspective.
- Talk with your doctor about your family’s health history.
Disclose any information you think is important to know, even personal
information that may be difficult to share.
- Keep a dated log of your general health. Keeping
track of symptoms or questions will help remind you to discuss certain
things with your doctor.
- Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking.
This includes alternative medications such as herbal and homeopathic
treatments.
- Make sure you understand what your doctor is telling you.
Ask questions, take notes, or arrange for a private conference with
your doctor if you need additional information or have further questions.
- Ask for brochures or additional information regarding topics
that are important to your health. Local libraries and the
Internet are good sources of information.
- Understand your insurance benefits. If your health
plan requires referrals,
let your doctor know, so he or she follows the proper procedure.
- Find out if your medications are available as a generic. Generics
cost 30-50% less than brand name drugs.
