Take an Active Role in Your Care

Make the Most of Your Office Visit

Develop a Relationship with Your Physician | Prevent Medical Errors (PDF)

You are an important member of your health care team. How well you communicate with your physician is key. Clear, open communication can help you make the most of your office visit and increase your satisfaction with the health care you receive.

Preparing for your office visit

Take some time to prepare for your visit. Write down what you want to discuss with your doctor. Consider the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of your visit?
  • What are your symptoms?
  • How long have you been experiencing these symptoms?
  • What other health concerns do you have?

During your office visit

During your visit, ask the following questions and take notes:

  • Do I need a prescription? Is it available in generic or over-the-counter? Are samples available? How do I take the prescription? What are the side effects and possible drug interactions?

  • Do I need tests? How do I prepare for the tests? What are possible risks? Where do I go for the tests?

  • What are next steps? Do I need a follow-up visit?
