WITHIN THE UNITED STATES, you're covered whether you need care in urban or rural areas.
OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES, you have access to doctors or hospitals in more than 200 countries and territories around the world through the BlueCard Worldwide® Program.
Your level of coverage depends on your plan:
Alliance Select® and Blue Select® PLANS: Follow these steps if you need care away from home.
Within the United States:
Outside the United States:
BLUE CHOICE® PLANS: If you receive care from an out-of-area provider without a referral, you have Level 3 benefits (your highest cost share) for services at a participating BlueCard practitioner's office or urgent care center. You also have coverage for emergency medical services.
BLUE ACCESS® AND BLUE ADVANTAGE® PLANS: You have coverage for emergency medical services when you are outside the Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa network. You do not have coverage for out-of-area care without a referral, unless it is a medical emergency.
Be sure to call Wellmark to precertify or receive prior authorization for certain services. This information and the phone number to call appear on the back of your ID card.
If you are covered by a Blue Choice, Blue Access, or Blue Advantage plan, guest memberships are a valuable benefit for covered, dependent family members who are away from home 90 or more consecutive days in the U.S.
You may want to set up a guest membership for dependent children who attend college full-time and out-of-state, and family members who reside in another state but are covered under the same health plan. If you are interested in setting up a guest membership, call the Customer Service phone number on your ID card before you or your dependent leaves the state.
Members can receive covered services from Blue Cross and Blue Shield participating hospitals, physicians and other health care providers. Preventive services are not covered unless performed by the member's Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa primary care provider (PCP).
