tomatoes

four

Varieties of tomatoes to try this summer:

1. Roma or plum:
for roasting and stewing.

2. Cherry: a perfect, sweet and simple snack.

3. Classic beefsteak: best served in slices or on sandwiches and burgers.

4. Heirloom: eye-catching, colorful varieties with exceptional flavor.

Seasonal, “summer” tomatoes are superior in taste and nutrients. Vine-ripened tomatoes have twice as much vitamin C than hothouse tomatoes (grown indoors).

Tomatoes are also rich in lycopene, a heart-protective, cancer-fighting antioxidant. Studies have shown that lycopene prevents skin damage from ultra-violet (UV) rays and offers protection from skin cancer.
