If you are enrolled in the Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa (hawk-i) program, your prescription drug coverage is a managed generics program.
This means generic drugs are covered by your health plan, and brand name drugs are generally not covered.
If you are prescribed a brand name drug, you may be able to receive benefits if it is considered medically necessary.
Before purchasing a non-covered drug, you may ask to have the drug covered by following the member-initiated exception process for non-covered drugs. You can find this on Wellmark.com and then forward the form to your physician. Or, you may contact Wellmark Customer Service at the toll-free number printed on your ID card. Upon receiving the form, your physician will complete his/her section, and fax the completed form to Wellmark Pharmacy Operations for review.
