South Dakota - Open enrollment for children under the age of 19

During the open enrollment period from July 1 through August 14, 2013, all children under the age of 19 can apply for a child-only policy or be added to an existing family (non child-only) policy. Children under the age of 19 will not be denied coverage or have coverage for certain conditions limited or excluded because of any existing medical conditions.

 

Please keep in mind:

  • Children under the age of 19 are eligible to be enrolled in a child-only policy only if they are NOT enrolled in a group health plan or any other creditable coverage1 at the time of application.  
  • Children under the age of 19 cannot be added to an existing child-only policy.
  • If creditable coverage1 has cancelled or lapsed within 90 days prior to the signature date of the application for anyone under age 19 listed on the application, the under age 19 applicant(s) is not eligible for coverage. 
  • Applications for child-only policies will have an assigned effective date of the first of the month following the date Wellmark receives the application.

  • Complete an application

Outside of the open enrollment period (August 15 through June 30):

  • Child-only policies are available all year. However, outside of the open enrollment period, children under the age of 19 are eligible for coverage under a child-only policy only if they are NOT eligible for, or enrolled in, a group health plan or other creditable coverage1 at the time of application.
  • Individuals under the age of 19 can be added as a dependent to an existing non child-only policy when there is a qualifying event such as: birth, adoption, or marriage.
  • Children under the age of 19 cannot be added to an existing child-only policy.
  • If creditable coverage1 has cancelled or lapsed within 90 days prior to the signature date of the application for anyone under age 19 listed on the application, the under age 19 applicant(s) is not eligible for coverage. 

 

1Creditable coverage does not include high-risk pool, an individual health benefit plan with exclusionary riders, Medicaid, CHIP, STMM or a plan providing less than basic benefits.
