Grand Blue Mile announces 2014 elite race results

More than 4,000 runners took part in the 5th Annual Grand Blue Mile race on April 22 in Downtown Des Moines’ Western Gateway. This year’s event included the prestigious USA Track and Field (USATF) Men’s & Women’s One Mile Road Championships along with the Grand Blue Mile’s recreational, team and competitive divisions.

 

The top finishers in each event included:

 

USA One Mile Road Championship

 

More than 25 Olympic-level athletes from across the country traveled to Des Moines to vie for a national title and a share of the USATF prize purse.

 

Men’s Championship Winners

  • Leo Manzano finished on top out of the 15 men’s competitors with a finish time of 4:05.71. Pat Casey and Garrett Heath finished in second and third place with 4:05.81 and 4:06.39 respective finish times.

Women’s Championship Winners

  • Heather Kampf finished first in the group of 14 women runners and set a new course record with a finish time of 4:32.62. Katie Mackey and Sara Hall finished in second and third place with 4:33.30 and 4:33.81 respective finish times. The previous course record, 4:43.02, was set by Kate Grace in 2013.

A total of $25,000 in prize money will be awarded among the top USA One Mile Road Championship Winners, with each men’s and women’s elite champion receiving $5,000* each. The breakout of prize amounts includes:

* An additional $2,500 will be awarded in both the men’s and women’s one mile championships for establishing a new course record.

 

Competitive Division

 

Men’s division

  • Ben Jaskowiak of Des Moines led the group of invitational runners with a finish time of 4:19.99. Robert Scanlo from Ames and Drew Burmahl of Cedar Rapids finished in second and third place respectively.

Women’s division

  • Traci Kresser from Clive finished first in the competitive women’s division with a finish time of 5:11.59 followed by Susie Duke from Marshalltown and Kristy Harken from Ankeny.

 

Next year’s Grand Blue Mile event is schedule to take place on April 21, 2015.

The Grand Blue Mile is an annual one-mile fitness run/walk sponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, in partnership with the Drake Relays, to engage individuals at all stages of fitness, encourage healthy habits and empower positive change.
