Grand Blue Mile announces 2013 elite race results

More than 4,000 runners took part in the 4th Annual Grand Blue Mile (GBM) race on April 23 in Downtown Des Moines’ Western Gateway. This year’s event included the addition of the prestigious USA Track and Field (USATF) Men’s & Women’s One Mile Road Championships along with the Grand Blue Mile’s recreational, team and competitive divisions.


The top finishers in each event included:


USA One Mile Road Championship

More than 25 Olympic-level athletes from across the country traveled to Des Moines to vie for a national title and a share of the USATF prize purse.

  • Men’s Championship Winners
    Garrett Heath finished on top out of the 13 men’s competitors with a finish time – and new course record - of 4:02.79. Jeff See and Leo Manzano finished in second and third place with 4:02.91 and 4:03.59 respective finish times.  The previous men’s course record was held by Peter Van Der Westhuizen.

  • Women’s Championship Winners
    Kate Grace finished first in the group of 13 women runners and set a new course record with a finish time of 4:43.02. Sara Hall and Heather Kampf finished in second and third place with 4:43.61 and 4:43.69 respective finish times. The previous course record, 4:45, was set by Sara Hall in 2012.


A total of $25,000 in prize money will be awarded among the top USA One Mile Road Championship Winners, with each men’s and women’s elite champion receiving $5,000* each. The breakout of prize amounts includes:























* An additional $2,500 will be awarded in both the men’s and women’s one mile championships for establishing a new course record.


Competitive Division

  • Men’s division
    Matthew Jurysta of Ontario, led the group of invitational runners with a finish time of 4:18.45. Drew Burmahl from Brandon,Iowa and Ben Jaskowiak of Des Moines finished in second and third place respectively.

  • Women’s division
    Kristy Harken from Ankeny finished first in the competitive women’s division with a finish time of 5:18.50 followed by Jennifer Jenks from Aurora, Iowa and Nelle Trefz from Prairie Village, Kansas.

Next year’s Grand Blue Mile event is schedule to take place on April 22, 2014.

The Grand Blue Mile is an annual one-mile fitness run/walk sponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, in partnership with the Drake Relays, to engage individuals at all stages of fitness, encourage healthy habits and empower positive change. The annual wellness event includes recreational, competitive and invitational events featuring a field of elite male and female track and field athletes from around the world.
