The votes are in! Des Moines band, Love Songs for Lonely Monsters, has won the 2012 Wellmark 80/35 Play In presented by Iowa Public Radio’s (IPR) Studio One. The band will open the second day of performances on the Wellmark Mainstage at the 80/35 Music Festival on Saturday, July 7 at noon. Fellow Play In finalists, Holy White Hounds and Seedlings will perform on free stages at the festival on July 6 and July 7, respectively.
Love Songs for Lonely Monsters, a five-member alternative rock band, have been together since 2009. Band members include Nicklas Parks, Justin Neuenschwander, Chris Lachky, Brian Gellerman and Amy Badger. The band is active in Iowa’s independent music scene and performed at the 2011 80/35 Music Festival. Their first EP was produced in late 2011.
More than 80 bands throughout Iowa entered for a chance to perform at this year’s 80/35 Music Festival, courtesy of Wellmark and IPR. The three finalists competed in a battle of the bands on June 21 at the Gas Lamp in Des Moines. The event was broadcast live on IPR’s Studio One, and fans were allowed to vote for their favorite act in-person and online. More than 200 fan votes helped determine the winner.
The Play In partnership between Wellmark and IPR provides a unique opportunity for Iowa bands to receive exposure on statewide radio and share the stage with national artists. “We’re thrilled to do our part to support and cultivate local talent,” said Wellmark’s Chris Verlengia, Senior Sponsorship Consultant. “We had fantastic fan support for each of our finalists and I’m excited to see where they go from here.”
