Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa announces Blue Advantage®

Affordable plans tailored to individuals' health care preferences

March 12, 2012

More Iowans can access health care through Blue Advantage®, a new package of individual health insurance plans offered by Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa.  These new plans give Iowans who purchase health insurance coverage individually the flexibility to choose the coverage and costs that best suit them.

“Iowans have different health insurance needs at different stages of life and these new Blue Advantage plans are tailored specifically to meet those needs,” says John Forsyth, Wellmark chairman and CEO. “Individuals have the opportunity to choose the amount of health care access they want, and select premiums and out-of-pocket costs that are best suited to their financial situations and the way they use health care.”

The plans include:

  • Blue Advantage PremierSM – a low-deductible plan with coinsurance for services except office visits to network providers. This plan could be attractive to many young families who make frequent doctor appointments.
  • Blue Advantage HSA QualifiedSM – a higher deductible plan that pays 100 percent of costs after the deductible is met. It could benefit individuals such as pre-retirees who have Health Savings Accounts that would help offset some or all of the deductible.
  • Blue Advantage StandardSM – a plan that offers low upfront premiums but greater copays and coinsurance  when members obtain services. This plan is well suited to individuals, like young adults, who typically are in good health and make limited visits to health care providers.

All plans offer preventive care services with no deductibles or copays.  Each plan provides access to Wellmark Health Plan of Iowa’s robust network of local physicians and hospitals.

“We’ve built these plans to provide coverage for what members will use today – so they don’t have to pay for features they don’t need.  As a mutual insurance company, we are always looking for ways to best meet the needs of our members.” adds George Hanna, Wellmark executive vice president.

Iowans can learn more about Blue Advantage coverage, or apply for coverage at or through an independent insurance agent.
