myWellmark allows members to create their own website to monitor health and health care expenses

Iowans and South Dakotans have more personalization in their lives than ever before.


Cell phones are personalized with kids’ photos. News and email are delivered to computers according to our exact specifications. Even the meals we order can be customized to our tastes. And now, our health insurance can be personalized as well.


Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has launched myWellmark, a new online platform that lets each member create their own unique – and personalized – health website.


myWellmark helps members manage their health and make the most of their health insurance coverage. Members can use myWellmark to:

  • Get health news, resources and wellness tips on more than 40 health topics
  • Keep the entire family’s medical records and information in one place
  • Take a wellness assessment that provides a visual snapshot of members’ health behaviors and their impact on overall health
  • Use symptom and activity trackers
  • Better understand your health benefits
  • Find a trusted health provider
  • Track and organize your medical claims and expenses
  • Sign up to receive health statements online

 “Two things we know about our members – they’re all different, and they’re all busy. One size doesn’t fit all,” says Mike Gerrish, Wellmark’s director of marketing communications. “myWellmark provides timely, relevant information to help members more actively engage in their health, and better understand their health care expenses, insurance coverage, benefits and plan options.”


myWellmark features 20 widgets – small, movable applications – that let members quickly access information from a variety of sources. Member can personalize their myWellmark page by choosing which widgets they want to use, as well as their color and location.


The widgets are also customized according to member’s plans and coverage levels. Members of group plans with pharmacy coverage through Wellmark, for example, can access a My Prescriptions widget to track their prescription drug use.


“Our members tell us they often don’t understand their coverage, their benefits, or even how their policy works – and that’s a problem,” says Gerrish. “We have a responsibility to make health insurance easier to understand, so we created a personalized dashboard to put our members at the center of the experience.”


Additional myWellmark functionality and widgets have been designed to aid employers in their efforts to manage health benefits for employees. According to Kelly Peters, marketing director, employers who can successfully engage their workforce have the potential to lower employees’ use of health care, which in turn may lower their costs.


“Employers need better tools to help manage their benefit plans,” Peters says. “myWellmark will help businesses get employees to pay more attention to their health and benefits, which in turn benefits their bottom line.”


Members can “go green” by signing up for electronic benefits statements

Wellmark members who register for myWellmark can trade paper benefit statements for online notifications.


Wellmark printed and mailed nearly 12 million statements in 2010, Switching to online benefits is not only easier for members, but also saves both trees and money.
